This week we’re going to start a new feature where we do an online interview with a former wrestler or current coach of the Panther’s or our feeder programs. This week we are taking a look at High School Frosh Coach and Elton Gregory Assistant Coach Sam Platt. Sam wrestled and graduated from Redmond High School and went on to get his degree from Western Oregon University in Monmouth, OR.
How did you feel about your last competition?
Coach Platt--At district we finished lower than we would like to as a team, but… with that said we had some kids who really showed up to compete and individually did quite well, we had two individual Champions one runner up and many more placers.
How is this season going compared to last season?
Coach Platt--Last season we had a very strong group of 8th grade wrestlers with a tough yet smaller supporting class, as they moved on we ended up with a smaller group in general. Last year we finished third at the District Duel Meet tournament as well as Third at Districts. This year we repeated our 3rd place dual meet performance but dropped to 7th at the District tournament.
What do you feel like your team is doing well?
Coach Platt--I feel like our team has done a great job adapting to situations that are less than ideal, they show up to each practice ready to learn and work. We have a very strong group of 6th grade wrestlers so we are hoping to keep that group together for the next couple years.
Where does the team need to improve?
Coach Platt--We have a diverse group of athletes, some who wrestle with courage and confidence, others who do not. I would like to see Elton Gregory wrestlers approach every match regardless of the opponent, with confidence and intensity.
