What is a Tour De Monde? It is an opportunity for states to send an additional team outside the country that does not count against participation of that states Cultural Exchange Program. It is funded through the participation fees of each wrestling participant on the team.
Will this count as my Cultural Exchange trip? No, this is an opportunity to travel and wrestle outside of the United States more than once. Since no Cultural Exchange funds are being used for this trip it will not disqualify you from going on the exchange trip in the future. If you have been an exchange in the past you are also eligible to participate.
Why Tour De Monde? To visit & compete in a complete different part of the world. To learn about the differences & similarities of life & wrestling in a different country. For whatever reason, this is a chance to represent the State of Oregon and its wrestling credentials to another country.
Why South Africa? We had a team go last summer and they had an unbelievable and fun experience. Please check this out from last summer http://2009oregonsouthafrica.blogspot.com/ The South African Wrestling Sports Authority loved our group and has been excited for our return. This is a chance to train, make new friends learn about a new culture and share our cultures with others.
When? We will travel to South Africa during the early part of August and wrestle, travel and sightsee for 10-12 days. This will be after all National tournaments and prior to any daily double practices for fall sports. This is a great time to just wrestle, meet South African wrestlers, and have fun.
How do I make the Team? Fill out the application and send a $250 deposit with $150 of the deposit refundable. This will be an expensive trip, but the experience will last forever. If selected you must meet all deadlines to insure your place on the team. We will need to purchase tickets, set up housing, and get appropriate travel Visa’s. You will also need to get a passport ASAP so we can match the travel visa to it.
Cost? We are estimating the cost at $3,000 per wrestler. We are hoping to take between 18 and 20 wrestlers. The more participants the lower the costs because of group rates in housing and other travel expenses. The assessment due dates are very important and will be larger than most travel teams for the OWA, so be prepared. Any donations you seek for this trip can be tax deductible and after being selected for the team you will be provided the OWA Tax ID#. Nationals cost around $1,500 and you are only guaranteed two matches per style. We will wrestle 6-8 duals and train with the South African wrestlers and the South African National Team giving you a chance to compete and teach your skills. This is truly a once in a lifetime experience
Application Date: All applications and $250 deposit are due Monday, April 5th. You will be notified by Thursday, April 24th of the selections.
